\n
\nSince the dawn of human, it has been the females getting pregnant and giving birth to babies that ensure the survival of our race. However, male pregancy would disrupt this law and posing numerous dangers and problem.
\nFirstly, females have the special adaptation for preganancy, such as elastic ovary walls, which males do not have. Hence, if males get pregnant, it may reault in internal bleeding, which will cause great pain and in the end the baby may not deliver. Secondly, it is also against societal norms. Pregnancy is the female's job, if the male took away this job, what will then happen to the female? Lesser pregnancies? If so, the female has control the number of pregnancies in order not to have too many child births, which may result in overpopulation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"24579323","dateCreated":"1274793155","smartDate":"May 25, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"Brandon_Ng","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Brandon_Ng","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hciithomelearning2010.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/24579323"},"dateDigested":1531977183,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Male Pregnancy?","description":"Pros:
\na) Can be fitted into the lifestyle of the couple. As mentioned in one of the websites, should the husband have a more flexible job than the wife who finds it difficult to give up her career, such feat will allow the family to bear a child while not compromising on the career of the wife. In a sense, it reverses the roles of men and women in society and is perhaps fair and the rights of women to not have to sacrifice their career and opportunities for the sake of the family.
\n
\nb) Families can still have children of their own in cases where the woman is unable to conceive due to sickness (i.e. Uterus Cancer) or comprises of a transgender, as mentioned in one of the websites, who has become female and yet lacks the proper structure and organs for child-bearing.
\n
\nCons:
\na) Health issues: Man lack uterus to carry the embryo and placing the embryo in a man can prove to be disastrous, both to the embryo and the man\u2019s organs. The bones of a man might not be able to withstand the load of the foetus, putting a strain on the skeletal system. The abdominal cavity of a man also lacks a placenta to provide the necessary anti-bodies and nutrients to the foetus, making such conditions detrimental for the baby.
\n
\nb) Societal Issues: Child born from male pregnancy might be discriminated against. The poor child will be confused as to who is his or her real mother as such a way of reproduction deviates from social norm. Furthermore, the man that bear the child might be ridiculed at for feminine features such as breast due to the presence of oestrogen and other hormones necessary for child bearing.
\n
\nc) Ethics: Such birth is not natural and man-made, thus religious groups will condemn these people and such technology as it simply shows men trying to defy God and trying to procreate through means that are against the laws of nature.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"24572671","dateCreated":"1274772463","smartDate":"May 25, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"tingchanghui","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tingchanghui","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hciithomelearning2010.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/24572671"},"dateDigested":1531977183,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Pros and cons on male pregnancy","description":"I am against male pregnancy not only because its disadvantages outweigh its advantages, but also because it is against nature for men to do so.
\n
\nBut first, while surfing the Internet, I've realised that in some cases, what people call male pregnancy doesn't exactly mean a male getting pregnant. There are females who decide to remove their breasts, develop huge muscles, grow a beard and yet retain their female reproductive organs - uterus and ovaries. Although they are males in the eyes of the law, they are still genetically female and could bear children naturally. One example would be Thomas Beatie, who is a transgender man and has successfully given birth to 2 children, and is expecting another child in this year. Therefore, if you consider the transgender man's identity, then he is undergoing male pregnancy. On the other hand, if you stand at the biological point of view, it isn't exactly male pregnancy - it's just a female looking like a male getting pregnant.
\n
\nThere are several disadvantages of a biological male getting pregnant. Firstly, there can be dangerous medical implications. Excessive bleeding and infections may occur in the male if the fetus is implanted within an abdomen cavity and the male undergoes an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus). No other organ is likely to withstand the stresses of pregnancy like the uterus and heal as quickly and effectively, increasing chances of excessive bleeding and infection. Internal bleeding may occur in ectopic pregnancy and cause much complications as well. Although it is still possible for a fetus to develop and be delivered successfully, male pregnancy is definitely an unnecessary risk to take for both the 'mother' and the fetus. Another possible implication would be the stifled development of the fetus, since a male would not have sufficient estrogen to ensure the healthy development of the placenta and ultimately the fetus. Although estrogen may be injected artificially, there are still increased chances of the fetus not
\nbeing able to develop healthily because of unsuitable amounts of estrogen in the bloodstream. The most important argument against male pregnancy would be the social alienation that the baby will most likely receive when he or she grows up. The baby is a product of an unusual practice. It would be a shame for the baby to know that while everyone else is conceived by the legitimate process of a female giving birth to an offspring, he or she is brought to this world through a male. This is definitely not something anyone would be proud of. It is extremely selfish of the couple to do this and very unfair to the child.
\n
\nFurthermore, as mentioned by my other classmates, male pregnancy is something that is against the laws of nature and illegitimate. The origin of the fetus is skewed, and I feel that medical technology has taken a step too far.
\n
\nA possible advantage would be to satisfy a male's yearning to experience true motherhood by going through the whole process of taking care of the fetus from the moment it is conceived. Some may argue it is fair for them to have such a human desire. Others claim that it provides more women with opportunity to pursue their career and ensure the rights between both genders (by having male share the burden of childbirth as well).","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"24571629","dateCreated":"1274767748","smartDate":"May 24, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"gohglendon","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/gohglendon","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hciithomelearning2010.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/24571629"},"dateDigested":1531977183,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Pros\/Cons","description":"Pros:

\n1) Since males can't conceive, they can instead fulfill the role of surrogate mothers (or fathers). This can come in useful in cases where the female partner is unable for various reasons (e.g. hysterectomy) to carry the embryo. What then happens is that the baby is conceived in vitro and then transferred to the father for implantation somewhere in the abdomen. Allowing the male partner to carry the baby instead of a stranger surrogate mother avoids all the complications (ethical\/legal) that come with surrogate pregnancy.
\n
\nCons:
\n
\n1) Moral\/ethical concerns - this is tantamount to tampering with the natural division of labour between men and women (who are the childbearers). Scientists are Playing God in allowing fathers to do something biologically impossible. Religious groups will kick up a huge fuss.
\n
\n2) Health Concerns for the Male:
\n
\na) C-Section
\n
\nA C-section will be risky especially because it is akin to open surgery. Also, the removal of the placenta via a c-section will leave a huge wound in the abdominal cavity that the male's body is not designed to cope with.
\n
\nb)The male abdominal cavity is not designed to be a womb and cannot stretch in the same way as a woman's. The growing baby may apply pressure on and damage internal organs in the abdominal cavity.
\n
\nc)The hormones administered to the male in the process of pregnancy may cause him to develop unsightly and unmanly secondary sexual characteristics. Other unknown side effects may also occur.

When male pregnancy becomes more prevalent, there may be a reversal of roles in which women can go out and fulfill their potential instead of wasting them at home. Furthermore, as some have already pointed out, many males are indifferent towards the suffering of females during child-bearing and therefore are unable to empathise with them. Male pregnancy will provide the unprecedented opportunity to experience this and perhaps this may improve male perception of their female counterparts. In the long run, males will become more understanding towards pregnant females instead of picking on their "slowness" etc, leading to better bonuses, longer maternity leaves etc. Male pregnancy also provides the previously unavailable option in which males can take over the role of females which are unable to conceive, hence allowing reproduction to still be able to take place.
\n
\nHowever, after reading on this, I share the view with many others against it. Well, with reference to Frankenstein, this violates the nature of life in which females were supposed to bring offspring into the world. Male pregnancy kinds of usurps the role of God as a creator and as Frankenstein forebodes, this will not conclude kindly and may result in dire consequences. Furthermore, organs present in male bodies are unadapted for child bearing and may affect other bodily functions in the event of child bearing.
\n
\nAs can be seen, male pregnancy has its own set of pros and cons and remains as a controversial issue in which will rightfully remain so until moral and physiological problems are solved","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"24568759","dateCreated":"1274757171","smartDate":"May 24, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"kaicong123","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kaicong123","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hciithomelearning2010.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/24568759"},"dateDigested":1531977183,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Male Pregnancy-Pros and Cons","description":"I believe that there are more cons than pros when we are discussing about this issue.
\n
\nLet me elaborate on the pros first. Many have argued that male pregnancy gives the males a chance to go through the pain that their wives had gone through, hence they will be able to emphatize with females more. Furthermore, in the case of couples who want babies but are unable to do so due to the medical conditions of the females, this may prove as an alternative for the couple to have the next generation, especially when the male is willing to do so.
\n
\nHowever, there are more inherent problems in male pregnancy. Firstly, it will definitely bring health detriments to the male body. The male body is not suited to bear child. The misbalance of hormones in the male body as a result of pregnancy can prove a detriment to the body. Furthermore, the bone structure, the pelvis and many other body structures of the male may not be able to take the pressure from a growing baby. The male pregnancy issue is also about the undermining of fundamental priciples and laws of nature. Males are called males because they are responsible for the production of male gametes while females are called females because they are responsible for the production of female gametes and the bearing of the child. When roles get mixed up, we are playing with fire, destroying the laws and fundamentals that guide the world for millions of years.
\n
\nBefore I end, I pose this question, if we allow male pregnancy to prevail, will there come a time when biologists start to manipulate males to produce ovums and females to produce sperms? Then will we call one's son a son or a daughter?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"24566423","dateCreated":"1274753613","smartDate":"May 24, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"chinzhixian","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/chinzhixian","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hciithomelearning2010.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/24566423"},"dateDigested":1531977183,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Male Pregnancy?","description":"There are a few benefits to male pregnancy. Firstly, there will be more gender equality males will be able to bear the load of maternity and conceive the child, and will allow mothers to advance in the workplace. Also, gender barriers will be smashed as the stereotypes of both male and female will be lost when male pregnancy becomes more commonplace. Also, if the female is unable to give birth due to reasons such as ovarian cancer, the male will be able to take over the place of the female and give birth instead. More births by both males and females will also be able to boost the population and help the economy by increasing workforce.
\n
\nHowever, there are a few problems which might stem from male pregnancy. Firstly, the male body is not designed for pregnancy in the first place. During pregnancy, organs are altered to allow for space for the fetus in the uterus. In a male body, that might lead to disastrous consequences as the body was not designed for the payload. For example, the male bone structure was not meant for carrying fetuses, and the man might end up with chronic back pain.

\nCons
\nI find this very disturbing though. This is a form of usurping God's role. This changes the role of males and females. Though people push for gender equality, I think a line should be drawn, and this crossed the line. Furthermore, the male who become pregnant may be teased by other males and rejected by society. This would also post a threat to the male. Who knows what would be the side effects of this pregnancy. The male is exposed to dangers, especially during the implantation and the delivery process. Perhaps they need new maternity clothes and special items to aid their pregnancy process.
\n
\nHowever, there are some cons of male pregnancy as well. It is not conventional process and most males remain ambivalent to it. As a result, normal males may mock those who are pregnant and call them girls and such. Some websites and reports go as far as calling male pregnancy a sham. Consequently, the kid given birth by the male might suffer the same fate as his father: getting mercilessly laughed at in school and losing self-esteem in the process.
